The Numbers

There are an estimated 6 individuals in the Philippines who commit suicide every day. This is basically a rough and small number if you were to look at it straight but if you peer through the window and see it in a different light… That is 42 Pinoys per week, 168 Pinoys per month, and 2016 Pinoys PER YEAR; and those are only the number of the reported cases. Now, that’s a big number. Given that we are tagged as one of the happiest countries in the world, we do experience these problems and more often, it is caused by mainly 1 factor.

Stress.

I was told once when I worked in the corporate world that, “Stress and pressure are given to those who deserve it”. Simply put, if you are worthy of handling a large number of tasks in a given day, then you are going to move strides away from the others but at the expense of stress. Pinoys, in my opinion, have 2 major traits written in our DNA. Firstly, we have PRIDE. We always take pride in what we do and will do what it takes to protect it at all costs. We are a proud bunch who can take the punches if it means guarding our Pride. Sometimes we even go lengths to protect other people’s pride.

And the other trait is WILLPOWER. Though a tad bit general, but we Pinoys are a big ball of mass filled with willpower. Combining those two and you have a warrior who fights like a beast when cornered. Where am I going with this? If you put a Pinoy in a work environment with these traits, you have someone who will not say no to a task even if the price they have to pay is stress and pressure, even if the pay is does not sum up to the tasks taken. This, in my opinion is the reason why the Typical Pinoy gets depressed.

Why so Serious?

Given the current state of our workforce, we know for a fact that the brunt of the people are working in stressful environments, thus the depression. Though I have to say that the government and all Pinoys are working hard to ease this growing number. This is basically the reason why majority of the hard working Pinoys from the big corporate world are opting to work from home.

The government is doing their best to make our work environment tension and worry free. Some of our vacation places are being revamped like the newly cleansed Boracay! Vacation leaves are mandatory for every company you work with. Use them wisely and enjoy them. Do not take your ‘work mood’ back home and enjoy family time. These are more than enough to keep you off the ledge. And lastly, do not take the things you see in social media seriously. The most common road taken to depression is comparison. Always remember that the roots of you being a Pinoy is being happy in the midst of stress and chaos. Do not let Depression control you…
