Bawal ang “Tolonges” sa Manila ngayon!

I was raised under the reign of Lim, Atienza and Estrada. I saw the rise and fall of the famous/infamous “Baywalk”. The dreaded blessing of the Divisoria night market. The overflow of stalls near Quiapo church. Personally, I was smacked in the middle of all this. I spent half of my life living in Sobriedad, Espana. It’s small street filled with lively people and just to top it off; we lived NEAR the RAILROAD. If you lived near this area, you probably know what was on the sidelines of the tracks right? We lived 1 block away from
the shanties placed there.

My friends, best friends and closest of friends lived there as well and we paved our own ways starting from that railroad, specifically in my friend’s house which located on that same shanty. I am saying this to set the mood because I have lived on both sides of the spectrum. We were not broke nor filthy rich but our life tipped on both ends not so much as to make it fall on either side.

Fast forward! We all know that Mayoral seat is now being occupied by none other than Francisco Domagoso. Or you may know him as Isko Moreno. Now, as I was flipping through the channels… I saw this news about the dreaded Divisoria being cleared. I asked myself, sheesh… this was done before! I have lived in Manila for far too long to see Mayors fall short on committing. I am not one to speak about how the underground business works in that particular setting but I know that BIG MONEY is involved.

That’s why whenever you see Divisoria clean, people expect it to be back in just a few months… or worse, weeks. However, my attention locked on like a heat-seeking missile when I saw this video of Mayor Isko Moreno saying, “Kapag dumumi yun, ganito lang iisipin mo. Kapag ang Divisoria napuno uli, kayo na mag isip na nalagyan ako (If Divisoria gets messed up anew, then it is logical to conclude that I have been bribed),” I was like, whoah! This dude is bugging! But I am loving it! That’s when I thought, could this guy be the
savior Manila’s been looking for?

I am pretty sure you are aware of the current state that Manila’s now in right? It’s under the verge of a huge rehabilitation! It’s not just Divisoria that made a dent into the norm we all accept, the underpasses near Manila city hall has been cleaned up and they also did a major scoop on how much crap (literally CRAP) the Bonifacio monument has! Not to mention, Mayor Isko Moreno constantly drives around Manila to check if anything is out of place and needs immediate attention!

People can’t help but compare the current tactic that Mayor Isko Moreno is running to President Rodrigo Duterte ways back when he was still Mayor in Davao. Though such professional words were exchanged by the two when they were asked about the matter. (WOW!) I was born and raised in Manila yet now I live far from her so I can’t help but say, “I wish we had a Mayor like him back then…”
